Happy Halloween!

From our family to yours--- have a happy and safe holiday! We already have the primary activity under our belts (Jared is recovering from his second battle with the dragon i.e. napping) and I'm off to start dinner for the missionaries! Pictures to follow in a few days! Happy Halloween!
P.S--- Major props to whoever can tell us why the pumpkins are so awesome! Mama gets the award again for most complicated pumpkin. Daddy's is most subtle. Jared's is, of course, the cutest (Gweg was the artist).

A Weekend in St. Louis

Since Addie's birth, Gweg and I had been trying to figure out when we could go down to St. Louis again. This proved to be rather difficult because of Gweg's crazy semester schedule. Earlier in the month we figured out that we couldn't make it down until December. So, to my surprise Greg turns to me and says we should go down to St. Louis this weekend since it's Stake Conference so I don't need a sub. I emailed Ash & Tracy (still feels weird calling her by her name) to see if it was a go--- one email and phone call later, we were clear for departure AND, just our luck, Jer was blessing Addie because their stake conference is next weekend AND their ward was also having a truck-or-treat on Saturday.

One week and finished costume later, we were off! Besides the drive down and not being able to play Texas Hold'em, this weekend was wonderful. Jared & Addie had slightly different schedules, but we were able to capture a few great moments of them together. They were both amazed with this other little person, except Jared could try to do something about it. He tried numerous times to grab her and Addie would just look at him wondering why this strange person was trying to touch her.

At the Truck-or-Treat, Jared debuted his KNIGHT in SHINING ARMOR costume. We got him a stuffed dragon on e-bay, just in case others couldn't figure it out. (Random note: Greg and I wanted to get him mini coconuts when he first tried on his helmet because he looked like Patsy from Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Addie dressed up as the cutest pumpkin around (I wish I would have got a picture of just her) with her pumpkin hat, onesie, socks and fuzzy orange blanket. While the men stood guard at the truck, Ash & I took a stroll around the parking lot with the sleeping pumpkin and over-stimulated knight. Yes, they may not remember they're first Halloween or eat their own candy, but dog-gone-it, they had to go to a couple of trunks---which was, conveniently, how long Jared lasted.

The next day was Addie's blessing. She wore the same dress that Tracy, Ashley, and Madison were all blessed in and looked adorable. I'm so glad that we were able to come down for it. Jer did a wonderful job. I found myself thinking of the past 11 years and how much Ash and I have been through. Like any other famous pairs, we've had our ups and downs, but I'm so grateful for her friendship and love. She's always been there for me and I don't know what I would do without her. I'm so glad she has a great husband and an adorable little girl. She means the world to me and I wouldn't want it any other way. I know you're reading this, Ash-ber, so, Amb-ley says thanks for this past decade and I can't wait for the next one. I love you dearly and I'm glad we became Moms together! Jared was nice enough to not be hungry until after the blessing, unfortunately he started to lose it right in the middle of the sacrament prayer (a first for him).

We spent the afternoon/evening playing games, feeding babies, eating food and hanging out at the Mo's. The only things missing weren't even a things---Elder Moniz and the Jackson 5 would have made that evening perfect (Oba & Jiji--- Tracy and Mike miss you and kept loving on Jared in honor of you). Every time we go to St. Louis, it feels as though we didn't stay long enough. I'm reminded just how much I love the Moniz and Green families. We love them dearly and hope to make it down once more before we move to who knows where.... the adventure continues...

Great Escape

At the end of his nap Jared loves to gibber-jabber, in a good way, to let me know he's awake and ready to be out of his crib. The other day his talking sounded more like shouting, so I walk in his room and see this:Since Jared has mastered scooting, he has been attempting to pull himself up using his play seat, the couch, table, and now his crib bumper. Since then, the bumper has found a new home in storage and his crib looks kind of bare--- oh well, it was good while it lasted.

First Costume Complete

I did it. Something I didn't think I would ever be able to do. It took two months, many hours, and a few tears--- but I did it. I made a Halloween costume. My son's first. I feel like I ran a marathon and came in first. It may not be perfect but I tried. Isn't that what matters? It's done, and who knows if I'll do one again.

Would you like to see a picture? Too bad, so sad, not until after this weekend when Jared christens it at a Trunk-or-Treat in St. Louis.

I still can't believe I actually finished it--- yay.

Pumpkin Farm '08

Since we had a great time last year finding our pumpkins, we decided to go back to the same place this weekend. Last year's post I expressed my desire to find all maze punches this year no matter what, well, five months of motherhood cured such desire. I did not want to put Jared through the torture, so I figured we shouldn't even try the maze--- Gweg thought differently. He had the confidence that we could get through the maze, as long as we gave up the hole punches. Sacrificing my battle for the overall war, we started on our journey. In the beginning the corn seemed too tall to overcome. However, forty-five minutes later, we made it, everyone still in one piece physically and emotionally. Part one of our day completed, we ate and geared up for part two--- the pumpkin patch.

Since Jared didn't sleep on the way to the farm, it was around this time when I started to get antzy. I worried that one thing would scare the little boy and send him into a tired talespin. I worried for nothing because the pumpkin patch turned out to be a lot of fun. At this farm, there is a hayride to the huge pumpkin patch. Our wagon teamster was the owner of the farm himself and, in one five minute hayride, he told us all about the history of his farm. It was really neat to listen to his family history.

After our brief history lesson, we were off in search of the perfect pumpkins. It wasn't hard. Almost every pumpkin we walked by was the perfect pumpkin. (It happened that way because of the late spring flooding. They lost the first crop, started a new one, then had to irrigate because it stopped raining--- irrigation=larger pumpkins and fuller corn). We then decided to hunt in the pumpkins still on the vine. Success, we even found a baby pumpkin for Jared. After the hayride back, we cleaned our pumpkins and decided to head home. On the way out to the car the people coming to the farm had huge smiles, some even giggling, when the gazed at Jared. I thought, as usual, they were just smiling at our happy little boy. When we got to the car I turned around and saw why some were on the verge of giggling: Jared passed out in his carrier. We tuckered the little boy out with our fun-filled autumn day.

All in all, we had a wonderful time. Even though Jared won't remember it, we'll still have the memories of taking him to get his first pumpkin.

Do You See...

What I See? There are two little teeth on the bottom front of his mouth. I've been trying for days to get a picture and this is the best I got. Can you see the teeth?

HINT: If you click on the pictures, his teeth are really easy to see and you get a close up of a really handsome boy!

Babies Anonymous

Anyone know how to cure a 5 month old of a drinking problem?

FYI: It's an empty root beer bottle and he never tried to tip it over to drink it. Jared liked the cool feeling on his choppers.

Sunday Walk at Owen Park

On Sunday we took the opportunity to enjoy one of our last 'over 65 degrees' days and went to a beautiful park to enjoy the fall colors. We had fun and got some pretty good pictures, take a look:
Upcoming: We're going to a birthday party and the Pumpkin Patch on Saturday, so stay tuned!

Bananas

Jared has not enjoyed rice cereal at all. I was so paranoid that my baby wasn't going to develop into eating solids properly, especially since he already has a couple teeth, I wanted him to get something solid-like once a day. So, after four attempts at the cereal, we tried baby Bananas on Saturday. He loved them; he loved them so much he was not rebellious when we tried them again yesterday.

We only give him a little bit, but we're glad he's getting something different. Jared will now get bananas once a day with one of his 'lunch-times' for a week or two, then we'll try some oatmeal or peas next week. The whole cereal seemed to cause more stress then needed... I know it's supposed to help his system get used to new foods, but he seems to be doing just fine. Why does the transition have to be so complicated? I bet it wasn't this complicated in years past. Oh well... can't say we didn't try.

Adorably Five Months Old

Happy five months, baby boy!

We've loved every moment with you and can't believe how fast you're growing!

Funny Jared moment: When he tries to really crawl, he moves backwards! It's way cute even though he gets frustrated because he's moving further away from where he wants to go!

Lil' Chewy

Jared likes to chew. The main reason he likes to chew is because he has two teeth. That's right, our munchkin has his two front bottom teeth. The right one is out enough to see white and the left one is out enough to add to the pain when he bites. Over the last week I've caught him chewing on a bunch of apartment do-dads. His new teething tools include, but aren't limited to, the following:

Mama's sunglasses
(too bad she didn't realize his teeth were strong enough to scratch them)
Daddy's clean jeans
His highchair placemat

Cork coaster
(got this taken away when Mama noticed he was actually widdling at it)and... our favorite...

Daddy's big toe!! Jared is one funny kid!

Laughing Boy

Since he chews on everything now, his fingers become victim when his toys are not near. [more chewing pics to follow]

Jared's Newest Tricks

"Look, Mama, I'm a big boy! I can...

get out of my chair when you're in the shower or doing the dishes.
Also, I can...

balance on all fours! I'm so mobile!
And because of this you now put these on my thighs....

stylish legwarmers! They stop me from getting rug burn,
although I don't think they're very manly!

Look, I'm changing everyday to enjoy this crazy thing we call life!"

General Conference

We enjoyed the talks given this weekend. As with every conference, I came away with a new resolve to better myself. I absolutely love that we are able to watch the sessions because we can hook my computer to the TV and watch them through the BYUtv website (it's also how we watched the cougar game from the night before). It's a marvelous blessing to have the technology readily available.

I really liked President Monson's talk in which he said: "There will be no tomorrow to remember if you don't do something today." We have that written on the top of our bathroom mirror from one of his older addresses. If the prophet feels the need to repeat something, I know it's important. So, hopefully, in our family, we'll have very few empty yesterdays.

Swing Swing

On Monday, I went visiting teaching and as part of it we took our kids to the park. Since Jared can't quite master the monkey bars just yet, we thought to give the baby swing a try. Jared was so excited about the swings that we decided to show Daddy at our park for FHE. Here are the pictures of a cherished family evening:

Yet Again

We went to the doctor's yet again tonight and it turns out that Jared has a double ear infection. So, he now has amoxicillin to add to his medicines. Sad for the little guy. I can't wait until he feels better. Correction, I can't wait until we both feel better.

Tooth Update: It's visible now... and it hurts when he bites...

Solid Update: Tried rice cereal again today--- it went better...

Bad or Busy?

Jenni sent me, and I'm sure many others, an article about Mormon wives.

After the RS meeting this past weekend I thought it would be a nice thing for fellow wives (and encouraging husbands) to read. Don't beat yourself up if your talents are different than others. Each woman is marvelous and our individual medley of talents enhances our own families.

Check it out: Bad Wife or Just a Busy One?

Funny tidbit-- I messed up dinner right after reading this article and I was really beating myself up over it and Gweg came up to me, looked me in the eyes and said, "are you baking bread?" Oh boy, do I ever love him.

SICKIE update: Jared still has a cough and now a tooth is starting to poke through. AND he got his Mommy sick with a cough and fever... oh joy...

SIDE NOTE: Our thoughts and prayers are with the Maughan family. My uncle's father passed away suddenly yesterday and we're thinking of them. We wish we could be there to mourn with you. We love you!
